Add a Basic Spreadsheet to Your Test for Use in Respondus Lockdown Browser

When to Use?

Respondus LockDown Browser includes a basic spreadsheet tool that enables .xls or .xlsx spreadsheets to be viewed and manipulated during an exam session. This functionality is available for Windows, Mac, and iPad editions of Respondus LockDown Browser.

Spreasheet tool.

NOTE: The .csv file type is not supported. Please convert this file type to .xls/.xlsx before attempting to use it with Respondus LockDown Browser.

Procedure

Locate or create a test in your Blackboard course.

Locate or create an essay question for use with the Excel spreadsheet.

NOTE: The spreadsheet tool can also be used with other question types.

In the essay question’s Text Editor, enter instructions for guiding the student through the steps to access, complete and submit their spreadsheet. Instructions should include:

  • Click the download option for the attached spreadsheet.
  • The spreadsheet will open in a new Lockdown Browser tab.
  • Complete the required formula or calculation in the spreadsheet.
  • Select the “Click here to save your work” button.
  • Paste the copied URL into the answer field for the essay question.
  • Do not close the spreadsheet tab until after you saved your work.

After entering the question text and instructions, click the Attachment icon. Navigate to and select the spreadsheet.

In the Edit File Options window enter a display name for the spreadsheet, select the Download Only check box and click the Save button.

Edit file options.

Complete any remaining question options and click the Save button.

NOTE: Please refer to this Knowledge Base Article for more information about creating a Blackboard test.

Following the test, you will see a unique URL in the essay question answer field for each student who submitted an answer. When you open the URL with a standard browser (not LockDown Browser), the spreadsheet tool will open, and the student’s work will be shown for that question.

Additional information is available on the Respondus Lockdown Browser support site.
