Grading

In the assignment’s navigation bar select the Submissions tab to see a list page of enrolled students and whether they have completed their submission. 

 
Quickly see which attempts are ready to grade. Student profile pictures appear with a red circle when they have late submissions, or the due date has passed with no attempt submitted.
Use the Filter menus to display only those submissions that need grading. At this time, you can filter by All Student Statuses and All Grading Statuses. The Filter menu doesn't appear for group and discussion items.

You can search for a student or a group and select how many items to display on the page. The system remembers your selection, so if you leave and come back, the setting is retained in the next session. You can select which page to view at the bottom of the screen.
 

You can view accommodations for individual students that may require extended due dates and time limits. Accommodations help students progress in the course even though they may have difficulty with some requirements. In the gradebook and roster, icons appear next to the names of students with accommodations.

Assignment exceptions can also be applied to individual students for the assignment. An exception includes additional attempts or extended access, even if the assignment is hidden from other students. Access the exceptions menu by clicking the more options icon next to the grade pill. You can also add exceptions after you post grades.

To accelerate your grading process, you can download students' assessment submissions and view them offline. You can download all or only selected submissions as a single ZIP file.

Select a student’s name to access their individual submission(s) for assigning a grade and feedback. On the Submission page, select the feedback icon to open the feedback panel. The panel remains in place as you scroll through the assignment and add overall feedback and a grade.

When you post grades, students can view them and any feedback you provided. All feedback for all attempts, even ungraded attempts, shows to students.
 

You can embed an audio or video recording of your feedback in the editor as you grade attempts. The recording option appears in the feedback editor for most graded items in your course. Students watch or listen to your feedback alongside any text you include.

This feature isn't supported on all browsers. For the best experience, use Chrome or Firefox.

When you start or review grading, you can point to a submission timestamp to view more information. Timestamps appear on students' submission pages and on their attempts panels when you've allowed multiple attempts for an assessment.

For example, on a student's submission page, you can view when the student made the submission and when you posted the grade. The timestamp appears in red with a "late" label after the due date passes.

On the Assignment Submission page, supported file types open in the browser. You can view and annotate these document types in the browser:

• Microsoft® Word (DOC, DOCX)
• Microsoft® PowerPoint®(PPT, PPTX)
• Microsoft® Excel®(XLS, XLSX)
• OpenOffice® Documents (ODS, ODT, ODP)

Office Suite Macros, such as Visual Basic, aren't supported.

Annotation sessions expire after one hour. You'll receive a warning message before your session expires. Your completed annotations, feedback, and files are saved on the page. When you return, you can resume working.

Animated gifs display only the first frame in the pdf viewer for annotation purposes. Download the submission to view the animated gif.

Original formatting and embedded images are preserved. If a student submitted an unsupported file, you're prompted to download it. Assignment submissions created through the editor aren't compatible with inline grading.

Bb Annotate is supported on current versions of Firefox, Chrome, Edge, and Safari.

 
NOTE: As part of the responsive design, the menu display changes based on the screen size. On medium and small screens, the Document View settings display the page number you're viewing. Annotation tools are stacked under the View Annotation Tools icon. On small screens, the Content Library is hidden.
 

• Sidebar: View Thumbnail, Outline, or Annotation views of the submission.
• Pages: Use the arrows to jump to different pages in the submission.
• Pan: Move the submission on the page.
• Zoom and Fit: Zoom in and out of the submission or adjust the view to fit the page, fit the width, or select the best fit.
• Annotation tools: Select each tool to view the tool properties.

Your selection for each tool is saved between submissions.

• Drawing, Brush, and Eraser: Draw freehand on the submission with various colors, thickness, and opacity. Select the eraser to remove annotations. You can erase parts of a freehand drawing with the eraser or select the Delete icon to delete the whole drawing.
• Image or Stamp: Choose a preloaded stamp or create your own customized stamp or image to add to the submission.
• Undo: Undo or revert the last thing you did.
• Redo: Repeat the last thing you did.
• Text: Add text directly on the submission. You can move, edit, and change the text and select the font, size, alignment, and color of the text.
• Shapes: Choose Line, Arrow, Rectangle, Ellipse, Polygon, and Polyline. Each shape has its own settings to change the color, width, opacity, and more.
• Comment: Provide feedback in comments. Your comments appear in a panel next to the submission. You can make your comments anonymous by selecting the Anonymous button. You only have the option to make anonymous comments if your institution has turned them on.

Students can access the annotated files but won't be able to add annotations in their submissions.

• Print or Download: Print or download the submission with the annotations.

A known issue with some browsers' built-in PDF viewer may not display all your annotations. Please view annotated PDFs in a native PDF viewer such as Adobe Acrobat.

• Search: Search the submission for specific text.
• Content Library: Create a bank of reusable comments. You can add, edit, delete, and search comments in the library. You can also add a comment directly to the submission page from the menu. Select the plus sign to add a new comment to the Content Library. You can Place comment, Copy to Clipboard, Edit, or Delete content from the library. Type keywords or phrases to search for saved comments.
• Highlighter: Select specific portions of the submission to highlight. As you highlight text on the submission, an additional menu opens. You can highlight, strikethrough, underline, squiggle, or comment on the highlighted section.

Bb Annotate lets you save a library of reusable comments and feedback that can be inserted directly into a student’s submission. The comments are stored in Blackboard and are connected to your account so that they can easily be utilized across all of your courses while grading!

1. To create a comment for the comment library, open a student’s paper to grade in Blackboard.
2. Click the Comment Library icon (looks like books) in the far right of the menu bar along the top.
 

3. Click + to add a comment.

 
4. Type your comment and click Save.

 
5. You can then search for comments.
 

1. Click the three dots  … next to your desired comment. You can then place the comment, copy to clipboard, edit it, or delete it.
 

1.    Click on Gradebook from the top navigation in the course.
2.    Click on the assignment that has a submission that needs to be removed.

 
3.    Click on the student’s name, who has a submission that needs to be removed. The document opens in the gradebook for grading and annotating.

4.    Click on the 3 dots to the right of the gradebook window and choose the Delete option to remove the attempt.
 

When an instructor chooses to allow multiple attempts, there is now a way to see which attempt(s) display as Needs Grading.
From the ‘Attempts to grade’ menu. The options are:
•    First attempt
•    Last attempt (default)
•    All attempts
Example: An assessment allows 3 attempts; a student made 3 submissions

 
From the Final grade calculation menu, the options are:
•    Average 
•    Highest (default)
•    Lowest
 

In Blackboard Ultra, the "attempts to grade" setting enables you to manage the number of submissions a student can make for an assignment and dictate how their final grade will be determined based on these submissions. You can choose to use the highest grade, the average of all attempts, or a specific attempt number. This setting can be accessed during the creation or editing of an assignment within the "Grading & Submissions" section.

To configure the final grade calculation in Blackboard Ultra, please access the Gradebook, select the "Overall Grade" icon, and choose your preferred calculation method, such as "Points" for a straightforward total, "Weighted" for category-based weighting, or a custom formula. Additionally, specify your preferred display format for the final grade, including options such as percentage or letter grade, and save your settings. This will ensure that the final grade is automatically calculated according to your selected criteria across all graded items in the course.

The attempt selector is located next to the attempt grade pill. This allows instructors to switch between a student's attempts during grading. This provides a more intuitive grading workflow.

 
Overriding the final grade is now an explicit grading option. The three-dot menu next to the attempt grade pill now includes an Override Final Grade option. When selected, an Override label appears above the grade pill. Here the instructor can adjust the final grade for the submission. 
 

You can grade an assignment with multiple attempts from the same places you grade an ordinary assignment:

• Activity stream
• Gradebook
• The assignment

When you select a student's name, a panel appears that displays each attempt, along with the date it was submitted. Select an attempt to view the submission.

The feedback icon appears next to each attempt. Select the icon to open the feedback panel, which persists on the side of the screen. You can scroll through the assignment and add overall feedback and a grade.

Use collapsible and expandable panel on the right to navigate through tabs such as rubrics, feedback, and originality report. You can also navigate the submission view and the panel tabs with different scroll bars. Independent scroll bars allow instructors or graders to scroll up and down the submission content without affecting the side tab navigation or the header. Use rubrics in a more practical way and provide feedback focused on a specific part of the submission.

 
Reminder: When you post grades, students can view them and any feedback you provided. All feedback for all attempts, even ungraded attempts, shows to students.
If you used a rubric or questions that are scored automatically, the grade may already exist for the attempt.

Final Grades
The final grade for a multiple attempt assignment is calculated based on the Grade Attempts setting you chose in the Assignment Settings. In the panel that lists a student's attempts, the final grade appears when those attempts are graded. For example, if the final grade is calculated based on the highest graded attempt, the final grade appears immediately after at least one attempt is graded. But the grade may change as you continue grading more attempts. After you finish grading the attempts, you can post the final grade for the student to see.

What Do Students See?
Assignments with multiple attempts list the number of attempts allowed, as well as how the final grade is calculated. Students view this information on the Details & Information page before they begin. When grades are posted, students can view grades for each of their attempts, as well as the final grade. If you decide to override the final grade, a message appears to let the student know.

Instructors can choose to exclude attempts that they do not intend to grade. Excluded attempts are removed from the Needs Grading workflow and any gradebook calculations. This provides instructors with a more accurate overview of their outstanding grading workload.

View the assignment containing the additional submissions.

 
Select an attempt to view that has not been graded. Click on the 3-dot menu for the attempt and choose Exclude Attempt.

Once excluded, the attempt will have (Excluded) next to the attempt number.

Proceed in this manner until all ungraded attempts have been excluded. View the column in the gradebook again to note that New Submission no longer appears. 

When enabled, the Automatic Zeros gradebook setting gives a zero score to students who haven’t made a submission by the due date.

To help instructors to find and grade late assessment submissions, they are now indicated as Needs Grading on the Grades and Gradable Items gradebook pages.

In Blackboard, assignments can be set to allow multiple attempts for students, and instructors have the flexibility to decide how to grade these attempts once students have submitted their work. Instructors can opt to assign a single override grade for all submissions OR provide grades for each individual submission. 

Due to this, instructors may continue to see the "New Submission" marker, even after grading a student's assignment submission. This does not affect a student's ability to view their grade and feedback but might make it difficult for instructors to keep track of grading and cause visual clutter. This can apply even if the assignment is set to only allow 1 attempt.

1. In the Gradebook (Grades view) in your course, click on the student submission that still shows "New Submission," then click View.

 
2. On the grading page, you will see one grade posted near the Final Grade. This is an override grade, which is a single grade for all the submissions the student made. Since entering a grade here does not count as grading an individual attempt, you will still see the New Submission marker.

 
3. To resolve this, look at the individual attempts found under the Final Grade. You may need to click the ATTEMPT drop-down arrow to view each of the student's submissions, or you may only see one submission.

 
4. To grade the individual attempt submission, enter the grade in the attempt/submission grade pill. You can do this for each attempt the student made.

 
Note: On larger screens, the attempt/submission grading pill may move closer to the student name.

 
5. Once you've graded the student attempts/submission, you will see a grade automatically appear in the Final Grade pill. If the student has more than one submission, the final grade will be calculated based on the rules you set up in your assignment settings (e.g.: highest graded attempt, or average grade of all attempts, etc.)

 
Note: You may need to click "Undo Override" if you still see the previous grade you entered in the Final Grade pill.

Note: If the instructor enters grades manually into the grid view of Gradebook, this also becomes an Override grade.
 

There are several ways to override a student’s grade. If the following method does not work for your grading workflow, then we can look for an alternative method. You can perform this task directly in the Gradebook by navigating to the assignment column in the Grades view and selecting the student’s grading cell.

 
There you can change the student’s current grade/score by entering a new value and clicking “Post” or pressing the Enter key.

 
If you then open the student’s submission for review, you will see the option to “Undo” the override.

Feedback on Override and Automatic Zero Grades for Tests and Assignments

Instructors can give feedback for overridden tests, assignment grades, and automatic zeros. This option appears in the Grades view, and the Submissions list after the override or automatic zero is entered.

Additionally, instructors can now upload feedback for students as part of the offline grading process. In the past, only uploaded grades were visible to students.

Students can view override feedback after grades have been posted for all attempts on a test or assignment.
 

With the "Drop Grades" feature multiple grades can be dropped from the student's overall grade. You can drop either the lowest or the highest grade. Follow the instructions below, or watch the video, to learn how to drop the lowest or highest grade in the Gradebook.
1.    From your course, click on Gradebook.
2.    To create a category click the Gradebook Settings icon.

 
3.    Scroll down to Grade Categories.
4.    Click Add New Category or use one of the default categories.

 
5.    Return to your Gradebook, click on the column icon, and click Edit.

 
6.    Open the Assignment’s Settings panel to view the current Grade Category.

7.    If you want to change it, click on the current category and select the correct one from the list.

 
8.    Return to Gradebook.
9.    Select Overall Grade and click Edit.

 
10.    Find the category that you want to drop scores and click Edit Calculation Rules.

 
11.    Click Enable to turn on the category calculation rule. Select Drop Scores and define how many will be dropped and if they are the highest or lowest scores. Click Continue.

 
12.    The Category will now reflect the current calculation rule.

 
13.    Click Save before navigating from the page.
 

On the student's submission page, the grade pill displays a rubric icon. Select the grade pill to open the rubric in a panel next to the student's work. 

You can assign a performance level to each criterion by selecting the desired score pill. As you select a performance level, the rubric's total grade pill updates. You can deselect a performance level and choose another if you change your mind while grading.

Use the arrow icons to collapse or expand any criterion. You can do this even if the criterion has already been scored. 

 
Performance level descriptions are hidden by default. To view them, use the Show descriptions toggle switch. Once turned on, the descriptions appear for each submission in the assessment. 

 
You can navigate between rubric criteria using your keyboard's tab and select a performance level using the up and down arrows.

To provide individual criterion feedback, use the text box in each criterion. There's no character limit on written feedback. The editor is a plain-text editor.

 
 
The rubric score and feedback save automatically as you make selections. Select the X to close the rubric panel. The grade you assign with the rubric appears on the student's submission page and in the gradebook.

For percentage-range rubrics, each performance level has a range of values. When you grade, you select the appropriate percentage level for each performance level. The system calculates the points earned by multiplying the weight, achievement percentage, and item points.

 
Provide feedback on the overall attempt 

On the student's submission page, select the feedback icon to open the Feedback panel. Type notes and feedback for the student and save them. When you're ready for the student to view the grade, open the menu and select Post. You can return to the item at any time to change the grade, even after you've posted it.

After you use a rubric for grading, you can't edit it, but you can make a copy that you can edit and rename.

After you grade items and post the results, students can view their scores on their grades pages or in the activity stream. They can also access a graded item on the Course Content page to review their submissions, the rubric, your feedback, and their grades.

When students view their graded submissions, they can select the grade pill to open the rubric next to their work. Students can expand an individual criterion to review their performance levels. The awarded scores are highlighted.

 
 
Override rubric grades

Override grades are scores that you manually assign by typing directly into the grade pill in the Gradebook. An override label appears next to the grade. You can also override each individual rubric criterion. 

 
In the grade pill, you can type a numeric value of no more than five digits. You can include two additional digits after the decimal point.

On the student's Submissions page, you can select Undo Override next to the grade pill and the override label is removed. The previous grade appears, or you can use the rubric to grade.

Associate a rubric after grading begins

Associating a rubric to and assessment after grades have been assigned will result in override grades. In the Gradebook, an override label will be displayed next to the grade. In the Rubric Details panel, you can choose to regrade any graded submissions with the newly associated rubric. When you select Regrade with the rubric, the rubric becomes active, and you can use it to provide grades. The new grades appear in the Gradebook, and the override label is removed. 
 

You can start grading tests from multiple locations within your course:

Grades page. The Grades page provides immediate access to all your courses' grading tasks. From the navigation bar, select Grades. On the Grades page, grading tasks are organized by course, so you can quickly scan your progress, set priorities across the board, and even begin grading. No need to navigate to each course to see what's ready for grading. 

Activity stream. You're alerted when student submissions are ready for grading. Select the link to go directly to the Submissions page for the test. The Submissions page is filtered to only show students who need grading.

Submissions tab of a test. When you access a test, the Submissions tab displays all students enrolled in your course. You can search for a student by name or student ID or use the Grading Status filter to display only those submissions that need grading. 

Gradebook. From a course, select the Gradebook tab on the navigation bar. When the Automatic Zeros gradebook setting is enabled and a student submits the assignment past the due date, the late submission appears in Gradebook as Needs Grading. You can choose a gradebook view:

• Overview
• From the Gradebook, select Overview. The Overview page displays grading tasks for you to complete including:
  • Needs reconciling lists all items ready for reconciliation. 
  • Needs grading lists submissions ready for grading with the oldest ungraded submissions at the top of the list
  • Needs posting lists graded assessments that are ready to be posted. 
• Gradable items view
  • From the Gradebook, select Gradable Items. You can sort tests in this view by Grading Status. Graded work is labelled All Graded or Complete.  Select the name of the test or X to grade to access the Submissions page. The Submissions page will have the Needs Grading filter applied. Select a student name to start grading a submission. 
• Grades view 
  • From the Gradebook, select Grades.  You can view your roster of students who submitted new work. When a student has a new item to grade, select New Submission, View to access the grading page for the submission. 
• Students view
  • From the Gradebook, select Students. You can view all students in the course. To grade tests for a student, select their name.

Select a test to access the Submissions page to begin grading. Then select a student to open the grading page.

 
You can collapse or expand the left and right panels; the application remembers these preferences for your next session.

Expand the Students panel to view the list of students who submitted a test.  Collapse the panel to view more of the submission. 

• Use the Grading Status filter to display all students or select the Needs Grading filter to focus on remaining grading work. 
• If a student has accommodations, a purple pill appears next to their name. 
• If a student has late submissions or the due date passed with no attempt submitted, a red circle appears around their profile picture. 
• When ready, you can select Post Grades to post grades for all graded students. 

Grade information

• If the assessment is configured to allow multiple submission attempts, you can select which attempt to grade.
• After grading, you can view grades for each attempt and the final grade for the submission. 
• Use the menu next to the final grade to post the student's final grade, override their final grade, exclude their attempt, or delete their attempt.

Submission information

When you select a student's name, their submission loads for grading.

• View the submission time stamp.
• Show or hide the assessment content displayed to a student when they attempt a submission.  
• Show or hide the question.
• View the question's score, if graded automatically, or enter a score.
• Use the menu to edit the grade or regrade the submission.

Feedback

Feedback by question — Select the Feedback button for a question to enter feedback specific to the student's response. 

Grade & Feedback panel — Expand or collapse the feedback side panel to add overall feedback for the attempt.

• When you post grades, students can view feedback you provided for each question or attempt, including ungraded attempts. 
• From the feedback panel, under Grader Notes, you can add private grading notes that are not visible to students. These notes may serve as documentation for a grading decision or grade adjustment.  

Audio and video feedback — You can embed an audio or video recording of your feedback for an individual question or the entire test. Students watch or listen to your feedback alongside any text you include. 

Embedding media isn't supported on all browsers. For the best experience, use Chrome or Firefox. 

Grade by question

Select the Questions tab on the left to grade the submissions by question. The center panel displays all the student responses for an individual question. This is especially useful when grading essay questions.

Expand the Questions panel to view the questions in the test.  Collapse the panel to view more of the submission. 

• Use the Grading Status filter to display all questions or select Needs Grading to focus on only those questions that need manual grading, such as essay questions. 
• When you select a question, the response submitted by each student appears on the right. 

Grade information

• If the assessment is configured to allow multiple submission attempts, you can select which attempt to grade.
• After grading, you can view grades for each attempt and the final grade for the submission. 
• Use the menu next to the final grade to post the student's final grade, override their final grade, or delete their attempt.

Submission information

• View the submission time stamp.
• Show or hide the assessment content displayed to a student when they attempt a submission.  
• Show or hide the question or the student's response.
• Show or hide the model answer, if available. 
• View the question's score, if graded automatically or enter a score.
• Use the menu to edit the grade or regrade the submission.

Grade a test with multiple attempts 

If the student has made multiple submission attempts, you can select which attempt you want to grade. In the attempt dropdown menu, you can view the attempt number, the submission time stamp, and the grade for each submission made. 

 
The Grade attempts setting determines how the final grade is automatically calculated, but you have the option to override the final grade. Each attempt is subject to the due date you set for the test. If a student submits an attempt after the due date, the attempt is marked late. Attempts submitted before the deadline are shown as on time. 

You can only override the final grade, not the grades for each attempt. If you assign an override grade without grading the student's first attempt, the attempt displays a Needs Grading status. An override label appears next to the grade.

When you post grades, students can view them and any feedback you provided. All feedback for all attempts, even ungraded attempts, shows to students. If you used questions that are scored automatically, the grade may already exist for the attempt. 

Final grades 

The final grade for a multiple attempt test is calculated based on the Grade Attempts setting you chose in the Assignment Settings. In the panel that lists a student's attempts, the final grade appears when those attempts are graded. For example, if the final grade is calculated based on the highest graded attempt, the final grade appears immediately after at least one attempt is graded. However, the grade may change as you continue grading more attempts. After you finish grading the attempts, you can post the final grade for the student to see.

What do students see?

 After you grade tests and post the results, students can view their scores on their grades pages or in the activity stream. They can also access the test, their submissions, your feedback, and their grades from the Course Content page.
 

Overview

• Grades must be posted for students to see their scores and feedback.
• Grades cannot be posted unless there is a score.
• Grades can be posted for an individual student or for all graded attempts.
• After grades have been posted, they cannot be unposted.
• Assignments and tests have a “Post grades Automatically” setting which can be enabled/disabled.
  • If enabled, grades are posted as soon as a grade has been input.
• Grades that have been posted will indicate the “Posted” status in the Gradebook - Grades view.

The Posted grade visibility rule also applies to calculated columns and the Overall Grade. If a component of a calculation is not “Posted”, students will only see the calculation based on what is Posted. Instructors though will see the calculated grade regardless of Posting status.

For example:

• Column A is a Test and a student has a Posted score of 90/100.
• Column B is Extra credit and the student has 5pts.
• Column C is a Calculated column, totaling A+B.
  • For the instructor, Column C will show 95/100.
  • For the student, if Column B is not Posted, Column C will show 90/100.
    • If Column B is Posted, Column C will show 95/100.

Posting Grades from the Gradebook

From the Gradebook - Grades view, grades can be posted directly from their assessment columns. Each column will display the number of grades which have been entered, and the number which have been posted.

 
Post All Grades

To post all grades, click on the assessment icon at the top of the column, then click Post.
 

Then click Post All Grades.

The grades for each student will now display as Posted.

 
Posting Individual Grades

To post only 1 student’s grade from the Gradebook, click on that student’s grade. Then click Post.

 
Posting Grades from an Assignment

1.    Navigate to an assessment via the Course Content page or via the Gradebook.
2.    From the Submissions tab, you can view the graded attempts and post grades.
3.    You can post the grade of an individual student or Post all grades.

Needs Posting

From the Gradebook’s Overview tab, you can see the graded assessments which have not yet been posted. By clicking Post now, you can Post all grades.

Auto Posting Grades

Assignments and Tests have a setting which allows instructors to “Post assessment grades automatically”. If enabled, the “Posting” step will be removed and any input grades/feedback will be visible to students immediately.

• This setting can be accessed from an individual assessment’s settings.

• Assignments: This setting is disabled by default.
• Tests: This setting is enabled by default. Tests that have auto-graded questions (i.e. MC, TF, etc.) will be graded and posted automatically.

Auto post will not post if there are mix of essay questions, multiple choice, or matching, etc. You must post the grades after grading those questions manually.
