When to Use?
If your instructor is using Respondus LockDown Browser for tests, you will need to install the Lockdown Browser extension to your Chromebook. Follow the instructions below.
Procedure
Click on the GVSU RLDB download link on your Chromebook to obtain the extension link for installation.
Disclaimer:
It is important to note that using a Chromebook with Lockdown browser has a number of known limitations. These limitations can directly impact a student’s ability to complete the exam. We therefore strongly recommend using a regular PC or Desktop. Below are the limitations.
- (Blackboard) Quiz passwords (specified via the "optional password" field in the LockDown Browser Dashboard) aren’t currently supported for Blackboard Learn "original course view" exams that use only LockDown Browser. For exams requiring Respondus Monitor, the optional password field is supported.
- LockDown Browser’s Calculator and Spreadsheet features aren’t currently supported
- The extended keyboard functions (for adding symbols and special characters) aren’t currently available
- LockDown Browser’s “Help Center” is currently unavailable, and there is no Live Chat support for students taking exams that require Respondus Monitor.
- "Allow access to specific external web domains" option is currently not supported
Potential error: Invalid Manifest
If you encounter this error when trying to install the LockDown Browser for Chromebook extension, it is likely occurring because the version of ChromeOS installed on your Chromebook is not meeting the minimum version requirement.
LockDown Browser for Chromebook minimally requires the version of ChromeOS that Google makes available via their Long-Term Support (LTS) channel. An outdated OS can potentially give you the error above.
You can check the version of ChromeOS on your Chromebook by going to Settings > About ChromeOS. We recommend keeping your Chromebook updated to the most recent version that is available at Google’s ChromeOS “Stable” channel.
Limitations: End of Life
Some older Chromebooks will have reached their end-of-life in regards to receiving updates from Google. If so, you'll need to use a different device for your exam that requires LockDown Browser. You can check if your device has the minimum LockDown Browser compatibility requirements.
