Issue
After upgrading to Windows 11, some users find that their Bluetooth or wireless headsets no longer work. The headset may not connect, produce no sound, or not appear as an available audio device.
This can often be fixed by installing a firmware update from the headset manufacturer. You may also need to update your computer’s software and drivers.
Note: If you have a GVSU Windows 11 computer, you will need to request admin rights here, before installing headset firmware.
Steps to Fix the Issue
1. Check for Windows Updates
Make sure your computer is up to date:
- Open Settings (Win + I).
- Click Windows Update on the left.
- Click Check for updates and install any available updates.
- Restart your computer if needed.
2. Update Dell Drivers
If you have a Dell computer, check for system updates:
- Open Dell Command Update.
- Click Check for Updates and install any updates it finds.
- Restart your computer.
3. Install Your Headset’s Firmware Update
Many Bluetooth and wireless headsets need a firmware update to work with Windows 11.
- Go to the manufacturer’s support website (e.g., Bose, Sony, Jabra, etc.).
- Search for firmware updates for your headset model.
- Follow the instructions to download and install the update.
- Restart your computer and reconnect the headset.
4. Reinstall the Bluetooth Driver
If your headset still doesn’t work:
- Right-click the Start Menu and select Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth and find your headset or Bluetooth adapter.
- Right-click it and choose Uninstall device.
- Restart your computer—Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.
5. Set Your Headset as the Default Audio Device
Your computer may not be using your headset as the main sound device.
- Right-click the Speaker Icon in the taskbar and select Sound settings.
- Under Output, choose your Bluetooth headset.
- If it’s not listed, click Manage sound devices, find your headset, and click Enable.
- Try playing sound again.
Still Not Working?
- Try using your headset on another device to check if it works.
- Look for troubleshooting steps on the manufacturer’s website.
- Contact the IT Service Desk for further help.
