Respondus 4.0 or Respondus Lockdown Browser?

Are you interested in using Respondus with your Blackboard course, but are unsure which tool you need to use? Respondus actually has several products that are available for use at GVSU.

Respondus 4.0 - A tool for creating and managing exams that can be printed or published directly to your Blackboard course. Exams can be created offline using a familiar Windows compatible text editing program like Microsoft Word. It’s meant for instructor use only. With Respondus 4.0 instructors can:

  • Author exams for use in your Blackboard courses
  • Preview, print or publish exams direct to your course
  • Easily move exams between courses

Respondus Lockdown Browser - A custom browser that students install on their computers for locking down the testing environment while taking a Blackboard exam. It’s meant for student use and is deployed with the exam by the instructor. When an exam is associated with Respondus Lockdown Browser:

  • Assessments are displayed full-screen and cannot be minimized
  • Browser menu and toolbar options are removed, except for Back, Forward, Refresh and Stop
  • Prevents access to other applications including messaging, screen-sharing, virtual machines, and remote desktops
  • Printing and screen capture functions are disabled
  • Copying and pasting anything to or from an assessment is prevented

Respondus Monitor – Works with Lockdown Browser to ensure the integrity of the exam process. Monitor uses a student’s webcam/microphone and video analytics to record a student while taking their exam to prevent cheating. It’s meant for student use and is deployed with the exam in Blackboard. When an exam is associated with Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor:

  • Students use a webcam to record themselves during the exam
  • There’s no need to schedule a proctoring session in advance. Students can access the exam when made available by the instructor
  • No outside sources can access the Respondus webcam recorded videos of students. Only the instructors that are enrolled in the Blackboard course can access the recordings for playback
