When to Use?
Configuring the Second Camera feature in Respondus Monitor allows you to require students to use a mobile device (smartphone or tablet) as a second camera angle during an exam. This provides a side or rear view of the student’s workspace while their primary webcam records their face.
Procedure
Instructor Settings
Here are the steps for instructors to enable and configure this feature.
-
Log into Blackboard and navigate to your course.
-
In the Details & Actions menu select Books & More and then click the LockDown Browser Dashboard.
-
Locate the specific exam you want to configure and click the dropdown arrow/icon next to the exam title and select Settings.
-
Select the radio button for "Require Lockdown Browser for this exam."
-
Select the radio button for "Require Respondus Monitor (automated proctoring) for this exam."
-
Choose whether to record Webcam Only or Webcam + Screen.
-
Scroll down to the Second Camera option and select “Require students to use a second camera in addition to the webcam.” Instructions for students can be edited.

-
Click the "Save + Close" button to save the configured settings.
Post-Exam Review
Once the exams are submitted, you can view up to three videos synchronously with the proctoring results: frontal webcam, second camera, and screen recording.
-
Return to the LockDown Browser Dashboard.
-
Select Class Results from the dropdown next to the exam title.
-
Expand a student's record. You will see the primary webcam video and the second camera video side-by-side (or as thumbnails) in the proctoring player. Click on a video to make it play in the larger window.

Key Requirements for Students
To ensure this works smoothly, please remind your students of the following:
- Mobile Device: They must have a smartphone or tablet with a working camera.
- Connection: They will need to scan a QR code displayed on their computer screen during the startup sequence to sync the second camera.
- App/Browser: Students do not need a separate app; the QR code opens a secure web-based recorder in their mobile browser (Safari on iOS 18+ or Chrome on Android).
