Accessing Respondus LockDown Browser on a GVSU Windows 11 Computers

When to Use?

Faculty and staff that use a GVSU provided Windows 11 computer will encounter an issue when attempting to open Respondus LockDown Browser (RLDB) on their device. Upon launching the application, the following error message will appear: "This app has been blocked by your system administrator. Contact your system administrator for more info."

This app has been blocked by your system administrator notification

This error is caused by an Auto-Update feature that was recently added to the Windows version of RLDB. When the application is launched, it immediately checks for and installs any available updates to ensure users are working with the most current version. However, this update process requires Administrator rights on the device.

Why the Error Occurs

At GVSU, standard Windows 11 users no longer have administrator rights on their university-issued devices. Without these rights, the auto-update process is blocked, and RLDB cannot launch. This results in the system error preventing access to the application.
