What Does Administrator Access Allow You to Do?

Administrator access allows you to make many changes to your computer that a standard user account cannot.  A few examples of tasks you can perform include:

  • Install and Uninstall Software: Administrator accounts can install, update, or remove software and applications.

  • Modify System Settings: Administrators can change critical system settings, such as network configurations, security policies, and user account controls.

  • Access Protected System Files: Administrators have access to system files and directories that are restricted to standard users, allowing them to modify or delete critical files.

  • Run Elevated Commands: Administrators can execute commands with elevated privileges (e.g., using Command Prompt or PowerShell as an admin), which is necessary for tasks like modifying the registry or running system diagnostics.

  • Recover Deleted Files: Administrators can use advanced tools or previous versions/shadow copies to recover deleted files.

  • Modify the Windows Registry: Administrators can edit the registry to change advanced system settings, tweak performance, or enable hidden features.

  • Enable or Disable Windows Features: Administrators can turn on or off built-in Windows features (e.g., Hyper-V, Windows Subsystem for Linux, or legacy components) through the Control Panel or PowerShell.

  • Manage Windows Services: Administrators can start, stop, or configure Windows services (e.g., Print Spooler, Windows Update) through the Services Manager.

  • Monitor System Performance: Administrators can use advanced tools like Resource Monitor or Performance Monitor to analyze system performance and identify bottlenecks.
