Get Computer Name of a GVSU Windows Computer

When to Use?

Follow these instructions to find the Computer Name (or Host Name) of a GVSU Windows Computer.

Procedure

In General:

The GVSU computer name will start with either a person’s username or the department network container and then a dash (-) and then a group of six numbers & letters.

There are multiple ways to get the computer name. Here are some ways to do this: one if nobody is logged onto the computer, and one if someone is logged in.

Not Logged In:

  1. At the login screen click on the words ‘Other User’ down in the lower left corner of the screen.
  2. Type the word (without quotes) ‘administrator’ or '.\' into the ‘Username’ box, do nothing else.
  3. The GVSU computer name will show up below the ‘Password’ box, as "Login to: [computer name]".

Someone is Logged In:

WINDOWS 10

Click on the Windows Start icon in the very bottom left corner of the desktop. Type the word “system." Once you see the Settings listing for System, click on that. In the middle section of the window is the computer name section. We just need the first short version listed.

WINDOWS 11

Click on the Windows Start icon in the very bottom left corner of the desktop. Type the word “system”, and once you see the System Information listing, click on that. With the default System Summary selected in the left windowpane, you can find System Name listed in the Right windowpane about 5 items down in the list. This will be the computer name.
