Windows 11 Frequently Asked Questions
Windows 11 is Microsoft's latest operating system, offering a modernized interface and enhanced features to improve user experience and productivity. It includes a centered Start menu, new multitasking tools like Snap Layouts, integrated Microsoft Teams, and performance optimizations.
Information Technology (IT) at GVSU will begin deploying Windows 11 to IT-managed computers in January 2025. The rollout will occur in phases, with all systems expected to be updated by August 1, 2025. This timeline ensures that all devices are upgraded before Microsoft ends support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025.
-
In-Place Upgrade: This method installs Windows 11 over your existing Windows 10 setup, preserving your files, settings, and applications. It’s ideal for users seeking a straightforward upgrade without extensive technical intervention. In-place upgrades can be completed remotely, but for the fastest experience, a wired connection on campus is recommended.
-
Clean Install: This approach involves a complete system wipe followed by a fresh installation of Windows 11. It provides a fresh start and can help eliminate any lingering issues from previous installations, ensuring optimal performance. IT Services will coordinate the upgrade, providing a structured schedule and support to ensure a smooth transition.
Windows 11 has stricter system requirements than Windows 10, meaning some older computers may not support the new OS. IT will reach out to departments and community members whose devices cannot run Windows 11 to discuss upgrade options.
No, GVSU policy restricts administrative rights on university-owned devices to ensure security and compliance. However, you can request temporary administrative rights for specific tasks by contacting the IT Service Desk.
GVSU is transitioning from individual private drives to Microsoft OneDrive for file storage. OneDrive ensures that your data is always available, even if your device is lost, stolen, or damaged. Files stored in OneDrive can be accessed from any internet-connected device, so you’ll never lose access to important documents.
Most applications compatible with Windows 10 will work seamlessly on Windows 11. However, it’s recommended to verify compatibility, especially for specialized software. If you encounter any issues, please contact the IT Service Desk for assistance.
For any questions or assistance during the upgrade process, please contact the IT Service Desk at it@gvsu.edu or call (616) 331-2101.

To ensure a smooth upgrade process:
-
Install Pending Updates: Ensure all Windows 10 updates are installed. Pending updates can cause the upgrade to fail and may result in data loss.
-
Stable Internet Connection: A wired Ethernet connection is preferred for faster and more reliable upgrade performance.
-
Power Supply: Keep your computer plugged in during the upgrade to prevent interruptions.
-
Time Allocation: The upgrade duration varies based on your internet speed and location. Starting the upgrade at the end of your workday is advisable to allow completion overnight.
-
Avoid Interruptions: Do not turn off, close the lid, or manually reboot your computer during the upgrade, as this can cause failures and potential data loss.
