When to Use?
When arriving at the BitLocker recovery screen on your Windows 11 device.
Procedure
If you turn on your computer one day and arrive at the following screen, then your computer has been locked by BitLocker. BitLocker is a Windows security feature that provides encryption for data drives. The feature exists to prevent data theft or exposure from lost, stolen, or inappropriately decommissioned devices. Sometimes this feature can be triggered by accident, and this knowledge document exists to serve as a guide for unlocking your device. Should you arrive at the screen below, please follow these steps to unlock your device.
1. On a different device, open your preferred web browser and type https://portal.manage.microsoft.com/devices into the address bar. Then press the Enter key on your keyboard.
2. You will be prompted to sign in using your GVSU email address. Click on your GVSU email address or manually enter your account information after clicking Use another account.
3. After signing in, you will see a screen with a list of computers that are assigned to you. Click the name of the computer you are attempting to unlock.
4. Under Device encryption, click Get recovery key.
5. On the next screen, click Show recovery key.
6. Type your recovery key into the BitLocker screen on your locked device and press the Enter key. Your device will now boot into Windows 11, allowing you to sign in and use it as normal.
