1Password | Families Benefits

When to Use?

For anyone using 1Password at GVSU, 1Password Business includes a 1Password Families Membership account. Employees can secure their home with a personal 1Password Families account thanks to the Families membership feature. Up to four family members or friends, in addition to your own account, may be invited to join an employee's Families account.

Each user has their own individual 1Password account, where they have full access to all of the software's advantages. You and your family members have access to the same premium features as a paying account with this advantage. The owner of a linked family account is the account's legal owner, and GVSU has no access to the linked family account's data.

Procedure

  1. Go to the webpage for 1Password at https://gvsu-edu.1password.com/ and log in to your account with Okta.

    Log on screen

  2. In the bottom right of the page is a reminder of the offer of 1Password Family Membership that works as a link to start the process, or you can click the link from your account page.

  3. Click Create a new family account. If you already have a personal 1Password family account you want to link, you can do it here.

  4. A new page will open, and it will ask for the name you want to use for identifying the account and a personal account.

  5. On the next page, you will be promoted to create a password for the account, and users with the browser extension will be asked if they want to save this account information in their business account. This does make logging back in to your Family account easier, as you will also need something called a secret key to log back into this account.

  6. Once you have created the password, it will ask if you want to have it automatically link it to your business account so you can access both in your 1Password application.
*This step is very important, as you are not going to be able to see your secret key, which is required every time you log in to a personal 1Password account.

  7. It will open the login page for the 1Password app.

  8. Once you have it linked to your business account, you should open the app and click on all accounts.

  9. Click on the option to "Manage accounts."

  10. You should choose "Our Family" or the name you gave your family vault from the drop-down box or, if you have the mobile app, from the window that appears. To copy the secret key, place the cursor above "secret key" and click. You can log in to the website using the subsequent procedures to acquire a copy of this key saved.

*You have two options for storing the secret key: typing it into another system or creating a secure note in your 1Password business account to store it. This gives you access to the secret key on any device that has access to your 1Password business account already set up.

  11. Go to  https://my.1password.com/ in a browser. You will need to enter your log-in information and the secret key you either viewed or copied from the previous step.

  12. When you first log in, you will see a window with your secret key and an option to manually download a copy of it.

Adding Family Accounts to Mobile Devices

  1. To add it to a phone, you can simply click "Setup Code" in step 10 to get a bar code that you can scan in the app off your screen with your mobile device to add the account without the secret key. It will then ask you for the password.
