When to Use?
This article explains how to use the Microsoft Education integration within Blackboard to add and manage Microsoft tools in your course site. Instructors can use this integration to create a Class Notebook, add Collaborative Documents for student editing, and share read-only documents from OneDrive.
This article contains 2 parts:
Procedure
-
In your course site,
-
a. Begin by clicking the purple + icon to add content
b. Select Content Market
c. Find the Microsoft Education option and click on it

-
The first time you access it, you are prompted to set it up. Select Continue setup.

-
Next, you will select the applications you’d like to remain available to you. We suggest you select both OneDrive and Class Notebook, then scroll down and click Done.

-
You will be alerted that your class is getting set up.

-
The next screen will give you the option to select OneDrive or Class Notebook

-
Select Class Notebook for it to begin setting up your class.

-
Then you will see the list of what you get with Class Notebook. Select Next.

-
On the next screen, you will select the options you want to make available in each student’s private notebook. A student can access only their notebook. Instructors can access all.
a. You can select from those suggested and you can add a new section.
b. Click Create
c. Your notebook is now getting ready.

-
When this step is completed, you will be prompted to open the Notebook.
-
Click Open Notebook

-
When you open it, you will see created tabs for Collaboration and Content Library that all students can access. There is also a Teacher Only tab that only instructors can access.
-
You will also see each of your students listed with their personal notebooks that you can access.

-
You can add a new section (tab) and add a new page within the sections.
IMPORTANT NOTE
Note that the Class Notebook automatically opens in Microsoft Sharepoint. Students won’t work on it directly within the frame of Blackboard like they will with collaborative documents, but it does not change any access.
A Collaborative Document is a Microsoft document that you post for students to collaborate.
-
In your Course Content area, click the purple plus button where you want to add the document

-
Select Content Market
-
Select Microsoft Education Collaboration

-
You can choose whether to select an existing document from your OneDrive or create a Blank Document.
-
You can also choose the type of document. The default is Word.

-
If you are selecting an existing document, click the option and it will open your OneDrive within the Blackboard window.

-
Find your file and select it, then click the Select button in the lower right corner
-
You will return to the previous screen and the name of your document will now be in the Document Name box. Note that you can also Remove the document.

-
Click Create
-
Blackboard will return you to the Course Content screen and you will see the Microsoft icon and name of the document where you added it.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE
-
When you click to open the document, you will see the full web version of Word. You can still edit the document, and it will automatically save in OneDrive.
-
However, students will only see the document itself. It won’t open with the menu and tool bars. They will be able to edit it, in this case, they can click on a cell and add their name.
-
The document will automatically Save to the source on your OneDrive.

Clicking the X in the upper left corner will close the document and return to the Course Content page.
CREATING A BLANK DOCUMENT FOR COLLABORATION
-
After you select Content Market and Microsoft Education Collaboration, from the Blank Document Type, click the arrow to select the type of document.
-
Give the document a name.
-
Then click Create.
-
The document saves to your OneDrive.

-
You will return to the Course Content page where you will see the Microsoft Icon and the name of your Document.

-
Click on the document name and it will open. Again, you will see the full web program (PowerPoint in the example.) Students will see the PowerPoint slides and not the menu and tool bars. (I don’t know if this is accurate!)

Students can click on the PowerPoint and add content. It will Save at the source, in your OneDrive.
ADDING A READ-ONLY DOCUMENT FROM ONEDRIVE
A read-only document provides the ability for students to only see a posted document from your OneDrive, but they cannot edit it.
-
To add a Read-Only Document, in your course site, click the purple arrow to add content. From the Menu, Select Cloud Storage.

-
You will see several Cloud icons for selection. Click OneDrive.

-
You will be prompted to Connect to OneDrive. After you click the button, enter your GVSU username and password. For the Blackboard integration, this is required even if you are already logged in to your OneDrive account.

-
After you are logged in to OneDrive, you will see a list of your folders. Open the folder with your desired document.

-
Navigate to the document you wish to add. You can select more than one document.
-
Click Select

-
You will have a preview of your document to confirm it is the correct one. Then click Import in the lower right corner. Note that you can add more documents.

-
You will return to the Course Content page where you will see your document where you placed it. The document icon is the same as other document icons.

-
When students click to open it, it will open the same as other documents you load in Blackboard. They will not be able to edit it.
