Move-In Guide

What Should I Know Before Moving In?

First off, Welcome Home! Grand Valley State University is more than just a place for you to learn. It’s a place to connect, a place to explore, a place to succeed, and another place to call home. There’s no better way for you to do it all than by living on campus.

You’ll enjoy a sense of community, lifelong friendships, and connections, convenient access to classes and academic resources, on-campus employment opportunities, comfortable and welcoming living centers, campus beauty, academic support, healthy food, recreation opportunities, and more. The move-in week is the week before classes start and your move-in date is determined by the building assignment.

Housing Assignment Information:
First-year student housing assignments will be sent to you via starting in late June. They will also be posted on your myHousing portal via myBanner (where you apply), which you can get to by following the steps below:

  1. Use your network ID and password to log in to myBanner at mybanner.gvsu.edu
  2. Select "Student" and then select "MyHousing"
  3. Review the information under "Room Assignments"

You may request a change to your assignment, but it is not guaranteed. Housing assignments are based on the preferences and priorities you chose in your housing application, as well as the time at which your application was submitted. If you are interested in a different housing style, please visit this article to learn about our room change policy. If you want to change your housing assignment during the school year, please talk to a professional staff member in your community.

Contacting Your Roommate:
We encourage you to contact your roommate prior to arrival. Open dialogue, communication of expectations, and compromise are key to successful relationships. Feel free to ask the questions below, plus some of your own!

Some Things To Keep In Mind

  • Sometimes roommates don’t respond right away. Not everyone checks their email or has text messaging. Try calling them or contacting them on social media.
  • People are not their social media accounts. Do your best not to let social media influence your idea of your roommate; instead, hold conversations with them.
  • You are not alone. Everyone is at least a little nervous about living with someone new. Do your best to keep an open mind when you talk to your roommate; it will help you both feel more comfortable!

Questions to Ask Your Roommate

  • Who will bring what items?
  • What can we share?
  • What is your class schedule like?
  • What are your study habits?

What do you like to do for fun?

Move-In Day

What to Expect

Arrival on Campus | You have been assigned a day and time to move in! Help us by arriving during your assigned day/time. Please refer to the move-in email that we sent to your GVSU email with the GPS address of where to go when you get to campus. This address is based on where you live (north or south campus).  If you need to register for an alternate date of arrival, you may.  Dates for alternate arrival are Tuesday, August 22nd through Sunday, August 27th.   Students may not arrive prior to Tuesday, August 22nd unless they are part of a pre-approved, GVSU sponsored group.

Check-In | Check-in will happen in various locations depending on the building you live in. A comprehensive email (aka "A really long, but important email that you're going to need to read carefully and save") will be sent in August with all of the details about move-in.   For now though, just know that you'll need your student ID or G-number to check-in and receive your room key. Once you have checked in you will wait to be directed to your living center, unload your belongings and move them to your room. Once you have emptied your vehicle, please move it to the designated parking lot to make room for the next Laker to unload.

Room Condition Reports | Before you unpack, be sure to complete your Room Condition Report found on your myHousing Overview in Banner. This document will make sure that you are not charged for damages you were not responsible for at the end of the year. Please complete it within 24 hours of moving in. All university-issued furniture must remain in the housing unit.

Unpack | After you’ve turned in your room inventory, settle into your new space! Put away your belongings, hang up your clothes, etc. Housing staff will be available to help with any questions you have.

Renter's Insurance | As a resident, you are encouraged to have renters insurance coverage or check the coverage provided under your family’s homeowners policy in case any major incidents occur.

Floor Meetings | As you move in, it is required that you must complete a virtual floor meeting that includes important information related to policies, procedures, and expectations related to living on campus. This must be completed by August 30.

Test Your Dining Card | Scan your student ID at one of the nearby dining locations to make sure your dining account is active.

Walk Your Route to Class | Walking your route to class is a great way to get comfortable with the campus layout and ensure you will be on time for your first class.

Get Parking Pass | If you will be parking on campus and have yet to get a parking pass, be sure to visit gvsu.edu/parking/.

Go Shopping | Purchase your books and GVSU apparel from the GVSU Laker Store. Visit one of our convenience stores on campus or hop on the free Campus Connector shuttle service for a ride to Meijer.
