Transition to Microsoft OneDrive
GVSU IT is modernizing how your personal files are stored by replacing your personal network drive (N: drive) with Microsoft OneDrive. This change improves file access, enhances data security, and ensures greater flexibility—allowing you to work from any device with an internet connection.
What’s Changing?
Personal Storage (N Drive):
Your personal files have already been migrated from the N: drive to Microsoft OneDrive. These files are now located in your Documents folder within OneDrive. Moving forward, OneDrive should be used for all personal file storage needs.
Departmental Storage (L Drive):
Departmental shared drives (L: drive) will continue to use the university’s DFS-based network storage system. No changes are being made to departmental storage at this time, and you will continue to access and manage shared files as usual.
Why OneDrive?
OneDrive offers several advantages over traditional network drives:
- Access your files from any device with an internet connection
- Automatic cloud backup reduces the risk of data loss
- Easy file sharing and real-time collaboration
- Seamless integration with Microsoft 365 tools like Word, Excel, and Teams
This transition is part of GVSU’s effort to modernize IT services and provide a more flexible and secure file storage experience.
When is This Happening?
The transition is already underway. Many departments have upgraded to Windows 11 and are now using OneDrive as the default location for personal files.
- If you receive a new Mac or Windows 11 device, your personal files will be automatically migrated from your private drive to OneDrive when you sign in for the first time.
- Migration is handled by Microsoft’s SharePoint Migration Tool.
- Access to your private (N:) drive will be removed shortly after you sign in to OneDrive. We recommend reviewing your OneDrive contents soon after sign-in to ensure everything has migrated as expected.
