Installing a Local Printer on a GVSU Windows Computer

When to Use?

Used when installing a local printer on a GVSU Windows computer. A local printer is connected to only one computer, usually with a USB cable.

Procedure

  1. Setup the printer at a location that will allow the printers power cord to reach a power outlet and close enough to the computer for the USB cable to reach.
  2. Connect the printer power cord to a power outlet.
  3. Connect the square end of the USB cable into the printer and the flatter rectangular end into one of the computers USB 2.0 (white or black) ports. Do not plug it into a USB 3.0 (blue) port.
  4. Turn on the computer, if not already on. Log in and wait until the desktop has fully loaded.
  5. Turn on the printer. The computer should recognize the printer and start installing it.
  6. Once the printer is done installing, verify that it has been added to the computer. Click on the Windows (start) icon in the very bottom left corner of the desktop and start typing the word "printer." The Printers & scanners System settings will show up at the top of the list. Click on it.
