Early or Late Move In

What Should I Know About Moving in Early or Late?

It is important that students move in on their scheduled day to balance our campus traffic, but we do allow flexibility for those who cannot make their schedule work.  Students who need to move in a different day are able to register for an alternate move in day.  This registration form opens on Monday, August 1 and will be available via the myHousing portal in myBanner.

First year students cannot move in before Saturday, August 20th unless they are part of a pre-approved GVSU-sponsored group. Some examples of of these types of groups include band camp, GV athletic team, Campus Dining employee etc. Group leaders provide Housing the names of their participants in advance, so we can plan for early arrival.  Not all groups cover the fees for coming to campus early, so confirm with your group leader if they are paying for you to arrive early or not.

Important Considerations
  • Helping Hands volunteers are only at buildings scheduled to move in that specific day, so be sure to allow time for move-in without the extra assistance from our volunteers!
  • Early Arrival and Late Arrival notifications are due by Monday, August 15, at 3 p.m. Early Arrival notifications made after this date are not guaranteed and could result in additional fees.
  • If you selected an early or late arrival and your plans change, go back to the myHousing portal and update your information.
  • Early Arrival forms are per student, not per room. Each roommate needs to submit their own notification for an Early Arrival. There are no guests (including other roommates not approved for Early Arrival) allowed in campus housing buildings prior to the scheduled move-in date.
  • Check-in instructions will be sent via your GVSU student email account about one week before move-in. Check-in times and location vary by date of arrival.
  • When you move in you will receive information about required procedures and floor meetings.
  • Campus Dining Meal Plans start on Monday, August 22.  You will need to make plans for food if you are on campus before the 22nd.
Requesting an Early/Late Arrival

Students are expected to arrive on their scheduled move-in date. Some dates result in a $35/night charge. There are no volunteers to help move you in if you arrive before or after your building's scheduled move-in date and time. We strongly encourage you to make every effort to arrive on your assigned move-in date.

Register to move in early or late by completing the "Register for an alternate move in date or time" form under the Apply | Cancel | Forms menu in your myHousing portal. If the date is specifically listed there, you may register to arrive that day and no additional approval is required.  Students who select "Other" are not automatically approved, and the request decision will be posted on myHousing portal within 1-2 business days.

Detailed check-in information will be emailed to GVSU student email addresses approximately one week prior to Fall move in. Questions and concerns can be directed to housing@gvsu.edu, or (616) 331-2120.
