University Break Information

Before departure, please: 

• Empty all trash bins and recycling; bring bags to the trash room/dumpster 

• Discard any perishable food items that may spoil prior to your return 

• Shut and lock windows and close your blinds 

• Turn off all electronics and all lights

• Remove any valuable items

• Shut and lock unit door

• Take home any personal belongings that are in violation of Housing & Residence Life Community Living Standards

Students remaining on campus during Thanksgiving break (Wednesday, November 22 through Saturday, November 25) must submit a Thanksgiving Break Stay form by Monday, November 20 (login to Banner > Student tab > myHousing > Apply | Cancel | Forms).

Residents must be out of their units for semester break within 24 hours of their last final exam or by 10:00pm on Friday, December 15, 2023. 

Housing staff will be completing inspections of each unit over break. Before you depart for winter break, please be sure to complete the following items.

• Empty all trash bins and recycling; bring bags to the trash room/dumpster 

• Discard any perishable food items that may spoil prior to your return 

• Shut and lock windows and close your blinds 

• Shut and lock unit door 

• Turn off all faucets in kitchen and bathroom and flush toilet 

• Unplug all electronics and turn off all lights 

• Turn down thermostat to 55⁰-60⁰; do not turn off the thermostat 

• Remove any valuable items 

• Take home any personal belongings that are in violation of Housing & Residence Life Community Living Standards

Residents must be out of their units for semester break within 24-hours of their last final exam or by 10:00pm on Friday, December 15, 2023. Break stay requests are for students who are planning to stay on campus during any part of Winter break (after 10:00pm on Friday, December 15, 2023, through Friday, January 5, 2024).

Complete the Break Stay Request in Banner > Student tab > myHousing > Apply | Cancel | Forms.  

If you are NOT returning to on-campus housing for the winter semester, please review the cancel and move-out process. Students completing Contract Releases are not eligible to stay past the end of the semester contract period (Friday, December 15, 2023) and must vacate their space by 10:00 pm. Residents can return to GVSU Housing on Friday, January 5, through Sunday, January 7, of the new year. 

• Residents are required to follow all University guidelines as well as all Housing and Residence Life policies during their break stay. 

• The University reserves the right to make alternate room assignments during break periods. 

• Housing staff will be completing inspections of each unit over break.

• A break-stay sign will be posted on your door to alert housing and facilities staff that you are in residence during the break.

• Please note: the institution will be closed for most of the Winter break; including dining services.

• If you need assistance during this time, contact the appropriate duty phone number below, GVPD at (616) 331-3255, or in case of an emergency, dial 911.

Students remaining on campus during Spring Break (Saturday, March 2, through Sunday, March 10) must submit a Spring Break Stay form before Spring Break (login to Banner > Student tab > myHousing > Apply | Cancel | Forms).

Housing Desks hours will vary during the break (see schedule below). Regular hours resume on Monday, March 11.
