Fix for SPSS Error with Sonoma Operating System on Mac

When to Use?

Fix the error (see image below) during startup of SPSS 27 or SPSS 29 on a Macintosh computer with Sonoma Operating System.

Procedure

  1. Close all instances of SPSS Statistics desktop on your Mac.
  2. Download the fix zip file for the version of SPSS you are using, either SPSS 27 or SPSS 29
    • The fix zip file is attached to this article at the lower right:

  • Or it is also available on the GVSU Network at \\office.ads.gvsu.edu\DFS\GVSU-Labdata\STUDENT SOFTWARE\ under the SPSS 27 and SPSS 29 folders.

  1. Follow the directions below to navigate to the ../lib sub directory in the Statistics 27 or 29 desktop installation path:

  • Locate the IBM SPSS Statistics27 or IBM SPSS Statistics29 folder and click the arrow by the folder.

  • Locate and right-click SPSS Statistics. From the drop-down, select Show Package Contents

  • Locate the Contents folder and click the arrow by the folder. 
  • Locate the lib folder and click the arrow by the folder.

  • Locate the file name libplatdep.dylib. Note the files are in alphabetical order.

  1. Create a new folder on your desktop and name the folder SPSS Temp
  2. Copy the file libplatdep.dylib and paste it into the SPSS Temp folder on your desktop you just created. 
  3. Locate the fix zip file that you downloaded in Step 2.
    • You can find the file under Downloads or in your browser. 
  4. Double-click the fix zip file to download it. It will open a folder named 27.0.1.0-IM-S27STATC-MAC-IF028
  5. Open the 27.0.1.0-IM-S27STATC-MAC-IF028 folder and copy the file libplatdep.dylib.
  6. Go back to Contents > lib > C and right-click the C folder. From the drop-down select Paste Item. It may prompt for a password or for you to allow it.

  1. The pop-up below will appear. Click Replace

An item already exists

  1. Close out all windows and open SPSS as normal. The issue should be resolved and SPSS should work as intended.
