How is Your Location Determined When Using the Zoom Phone App and Dialing 911 Emergency.

When to Use?

This article helps understand what happens when you use your Zoom phone for a 911 emergency call. It provides information on how Zoom Phone determines your location, and how to update location, when Zoom is not able to detect it.

Procedure

On-Campus:

When you dial 911 from handset zoom phone, desktop or laptop with Zoom Phone App, Zoom Phone will automatically detect your location.

Off-Campus:

When you dial 911 from desktop or laptop with Zoom Phone App while off campus, Zoom Phone will detect your location using location services and your account settings. If it is a new location, you will see an icon with an arrow and dot in upper right corner. You can click on this to update or confirm your address. If it is a location that was previously set, Zoom will recognize this and set it for you.

Zoom will use the following data sources in order:

  • Location services (if enabled on your device) GVSU supplied computers will have location services forced on for Zoom phone.
  • If location services are not enabled, or it cannot detect your location, Zoom will report the building and address your account is associated with.

If you routinely work at various locations, we recommend that you keep your addresses up to date.

Any Location – Mobile Device using Zoom Phone App:

The Zoom Phone app on 911 emergency calls will use your cell phone service. Your phone carrier determines your location. Your phone data plan provider is responsible for routing all 911 calls from the device. There are no additional settings needed on mobile phones.
