It is strongly recommended that residents obtain renter's insurance while living on campus. Renter’s insurance can ensure that you are reimbursed for losses if your personal property is lost, stolen or damaged. It may cover injuries to guests and/or visitors.
Grand Valley State University does not provide residents with protection against lost, damaged or stolen personal property, or for injury to anyone (resident, guest, etc.) because of residents' own actions, their guests, or others.
Further, residents will be held responsible for damages to university property. Housing and Residence Life reserves the right to charge or fine resident’s for unit or building damages, damages to grounds, removal of personal belongings, cleaning, keys, swipe cards, changing of the door lock(s), etc. For additional information we encourage you to carefully read the Housing and Residence Life Community Living Standards, specifically the following sections:
- 3.3 Prohibited Items
- 3.4 Regulated Items
- 3.5.1 Assistance Animals and 3.5.2 Service Animals
- 3.7 GVSU Guest Policy
- 3.10 Housing Damages Assessment
- 4.8 Damage to Property
- 4.9 Disruptive Conduct or Behavior
- 4.35 Recreation in Hallways and Public Areas
- 9.1 Housing Removal Process
Not all insurance policies cover the same losses, so make sure you know specifically what is covered in the policy that you are considering. It is important that you understand the specific terms and costs of any insurance policy before you sign on the dotted line.
Grand Valley State University does not sponsor or endorse any specific renters insurance policies. Residents should research student-specific policies, add extensions to parents' or supporters' home insurance policies, consider bundling with a current auto insurance policy, or buy a standalone policy through a reputable provider. College renters insurance policies typically start at around $10 to $15 per month.
