Windows 11 Roadmap for GVSU

Information Technology will begin deploying Windows 11 to GVSU IT-managed computers in January 2025. The deployment will be done in phases, with different departments onboarded at various times, and all systems updated by August 1, 2025.  Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, ending updates and security patches.  IT is committed to providing the latest technology and tools to help everyone be more productive and efficient. The deployment of Windows 11 is just one of the many initiatives that IT is undertaking to achieve this goal.

What is Windows 11

Windows 11 is Microsoft’s newest operating system(OS), offering an upgrade from the familiar Windows experience. Windows 11 includes several improvements such as:

  • Modern and Updated UI: Windows 11 features a streamlined design that enhances productivity and reduces visual clutter. The centered Start menu and taskbar provide easier access to frequently used apps.

  • Accessibility Enhancements: Improved built-in accessibility tools, such as voice typing and more comprehensive screen reader options, ensure that users with diverse needs can work effectively.

  • Utility Improvements: Updated versions of core applications, including Notepad and File Explorer, come with new features like tabbed browsing and improved performance. Terminal Sessions now support enhanced customization for power users.

  • Built-in AI Functionality: Windows 11 incorporates AI capabilities for more intelligent suggestions and improved workflow efficiencies, such as enhanced search and recommendations in certain apps.

  • Performance Upgrades: The OS is optimized to use system resources more efficiently, resulting in faster boot times and application launches, which helps boost productivity.

Additionally, Windows 11 provides automatic backup for Documents and Desktop folders to OneDrive. This provides an extra layer of protection for important files, ensuring they remain accessible if a device is lost or broken. OneDrive will also provide remote access to these files from other devices.

Can my device support Windows 11?

Windows 11 has stricter system requirements than Windows 10, meaning some older computers may not support the new OS. IT will reach out to departments and community members whose devices cannot run Windows 11 to discuss upgrade options.

What can I expect?

You will have two options for upgrading to Windows 11:

  • In-Place Upgrade: This option allows for a seamless transition, installing Windows 11 directly over your existing Windows 10 setup. It preserves your files, settings, and applications, making it ideal for community members who prefer a straightforward upgrade without extensive technical intervention. In-place upgrades can be completed remotely, but for the fastest Windows 11 upgrade, we recommend using a wired connection while on campus.

  • Clean Install: This option involves a complete wipe of your current system, followed by a fresh installation of Windows 11. It provides a fresh start and can help eliminate any lingering issues from previous installations, ensuring optimal performance. IT Services will coordinate the upgrade, providing a structured schedule and support to ensure a smooth transition.

Targeted communications will be sent prior to your department's scheduled migration date. These communications will include:

  • Detailed instructions on preparing your device.
  • Steps to back up your files—ensuring your data is backed up is essential to prevent any loss during the upgrade process.
  • Action items to help facilitate a smooth transition.

Please be on the lookout for these updates as there will be specific information and action items for you.

What Support materials are available?

  • IT will provide training opportunities to support the campus community both during and after the Windows 11 deployment.  The service portal will be updated with comprehensive resources, including troubleshooting guides, tips for navigating the new interface, and FAQs to support a smooth transition.

What about Windows lab computers?

All computer labs will be upgraded during the Spring/Summer 2025 semesters, with upgrades completed before the Fall 2025 semester begins. Faculty are encouraged to submit any lab software requests as soon as possible for this transition.

What happens if I don’t upgrade?

Any systems still running Windows 10 after October 14, 2025, will be removed from the network.
