When to Use?

If you want to download a test or pool as a Word Document or PDF from a Blackboard course, you must use Respondus 4.0. Blackboard does not currently have a functionality to download a test as a Word or PDF file without the use of Respondus 4.0.

This article will walk you through downloading a copy of your Blackboard test as a Word or PDF file using Respondus 4.0, with information on requesting it found below. Respondus 4.0 is currently only compatible with Windows devices. The resulting file can be used to print a hard copy of your Blackboard test.

Procedure

Respondus 4.0 is a Windows based authoring tool that makes it easy to create and manage exams for Blackboard. It also includes the ability to convert a test created in Blackboard into a Microsoft Word or PDF file. Respondus must be installed on your computer.

Note: To request access to Respondus, please contact it@gvsu.edu and you will be added to an organization on Blackboard. In this organization site, you will be able to download the latest version of Respondus and find all the login information that you need to set up the program on your computer.

  1. If you are downloading Responuds 4.0 for the first time, please follow the set-up instructions found in the organization site.
  2. Open Respondus 4.0.
  3. Click the Retrieval + Reports tab.

5. The Retrieve Questions Wizard will ask you to choose an existing server or “add new server”. Your Blackboard Server should already be set up at this point if you followed the set-up instructions found in the organization. Click Next.

6. A pop-up will appear asking you to log into Blackboard with your GVSU login credentials. Click OK.

7. A new browser window will pop-up and direct you to GVSU’s Blackboard login page. Log in using your GVSU credentials, and then click ‘Continue After Log-in’.

8. Once you have logged in, the Retrieve Questions Wizard will provide you with many fields to fill out, including the course you want to retrieve a test from, as well as the Test, Survey, or Pool you want to retrieve, and what you want to name your new file. Click the drop-down arrows to choose from your course’s content.

9. Once you’ve chosen the course, exam, and name for the new file, click Next.

10. The Retrieve Questions Wizard will begin to download your questions and tell you when it has completed successfully. Once Completed Successfully shows in the dialogue box, click Finish. You will be prompted that the File Saved. Click OK. Then click Finish again.

11. Now to save the file as a Word Document or PDF, click the Preview & Publish tab. Then click Print Options on the left.

12. In the Print Options page, scroll down to the bottom of the page.

  • To save the file as a Word Document, click Save to File.
  • To save the file as a PDF, click Send to Printer.

13. You can now name the file and save it to your computer to access as a Word Document which can be edited, or a PDF that can be printed.
