Upgrade Your Mac Sign-In Experience

Summary

Learn how to upgrade your GVSU Mac sign-in experience. This article explains the benefits of the upgrade, walks you through the process, and describes how to complete registration to maintain access to university resources.

Body

Overview

GVSU is updating how managed Mac computers sign in to university services. This change provides a more secure and streamlined experience, improves compatibility with Microsoft services, and prepares your Mac for future macOS updates.

To complete the transition, you will need to upgrade your Mac sign-in and register your Mac with your GVSU account.

As part of this change, you will create a new Mac password that is separate from your GVSU password. Your Mac password must be at least six characters long and will be used to unlock your Mac.

This upgrade is available only on your primary GVSU Mac. Shared and lab computers are not affected, and Upgrade My Sign In will not be available in GVSU Software on those devices.

The Mac sign-in upgrade is optional for a limited time. It will become the standard sign-in experience with a future macOS upgrade, so we encourage you to complete the transition at your convenience.

Benefits

After completing registration, you will benefit from:

  • A simpler sign-in experience
  • Improved integration with Microsoft services with fewer MFA requests
  • Better support for future macOS updates and security improvements

Before You Begin

Before starting, please make sure:

  • You are connected to the internet.
  • You have saved your work.
  • You know your current Mac password.

After the upgrade, your Mac password will no longer need to match your GVSU password.

  2. Your new password must be at least six characters long.
  3. Your Mac password does not need to match your GVSU password.

Use this password whenever you unlock your Mac.

Complete Account Registration

After signing in:

  1. Look for the PSSO registration prompt in the menu bar.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  2. Select the prompt and sign in with your GVSU account.
  3. Complete the registration process.

This final step registers your Mac with your GVSU account and completes the sign-in upgrade.

Important: Complete Registration

Completing registration is required to maintain full access to GVSU resources.

If you do not complete registration, access to some services may be reduced, including:

  • Printing services
  • DFS (Distributed File System) network locations
  • Other university resources that require authentication

Your access to applications through Okta is not affected by this change.

If you postpone registration, you can complete it later by selecting the registration prompt from the menu bar.
