When to Use?

Use this article to understand Grand Valley State University's requirements and restrictions for wireless devices operating on the university network. These guidelines apply to faculty, staff, students, and visitors using wireless access points, routers, switches, or other radio-frequency devices on GVSU campuses. The purpose of these guidelines is to minimize wireless interference, maintain network security, and ensure reliable wireless service for the campus community.

Guidelines

  1. Do not use unauthorized 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz wireless devices in university-owned buildings where GVSU wireless service is available.

  2. Consult Information Technology before deploying a wireless device that is required for a teaching, research, or other university-related purpose. IT will evaluate whether the device can be used without affecting the campus wireless network.

  3. Discontinue use of a wireless device if Information Technology determines that it is causing interference or negatively affecting network operations. IT reserves the right to restrict the use of devices that impact the university wireless environment.

Faculty and Staff

  • Personally purchased wireless access points may not be used on any GVSU campus.

  • Personally purchased routers may not be used on any GVSU campus.

  • Personally purchased network switches may not be used on any GVSU campus.

Students

  • Personally purchased wireless access points may not be used on any GVSU campus.

  • Personally purchased routers may not be used on any GVSU campus.

  • Unauthorized wireless devices may result in the termination of the associated network connection.

Residence Halls and Campus Apartments

  • If your room or apartment does not provide one network port per resident, contact the IT Service Desk to request assistance with obtaining network connectivity.

  • If each resident has an available network port, students may use a mini-switch to provide additional wired network connections for personal devices.
