How to retrieve a secondary password to log into Ivanti Secure Access VPN (Formerly Pulse Secure)

When to Use?

After connecting to the VPN and entering your GVSU username and password, you will be prompted with a “Secondary Password” field. This article describes how to retrieve the secondary password.

Note: This only applies to staff/faculty accounts using the vpn.gvsu.edu server URL in  Ivanti Secure Access Client.

Procedure

In the “Secondary Password” field, type only one of the following:

  • push” to receive a notification via the Duo application on your phone
    • After typing push, you will need to tap “Approve” on the notification that pops-up on your smartphone
    • Pulse Secure will connect automatically after tapping "Approve"
  • phone” to receive a phone call from Duo
    • Answer the call and press any key on your phone
    • Pulse Secure will connect after you press the key
  • sms” to receive a passcode via text message
    • After typing sms, Pulse Secure will state that your credentials were invalid and the “Secondary Password” field will clear
    • You will receive a text message with a code; input the code into the “Secondary Password” field
    • Click "Connect" and Pulse Secure will successfully login
  • enter the passcode generated by the Duo application
    • Open the Duo application on your phone
    • On the screen, under Grand Valley’s name, you’ll see the word passcode and 6 bullets
    • Tap “Show” to the right of that passcode
    • Tap "Refresh Passcode", then type the 6 numbers into the “Secondary Password" field in Pulse Secure
    • Click "Connect" and Pulse Secure will successfully login
