Using InCommon to login to Research.gov

Summary

How to login to Research.gov using InCommon federated authentication with your GVSU username and password.

Body

Research.gov had implemented new MFA requirements for authentication. Under these requirements, users can choose to purchase a hardware key to use in conjunction with their existing NSF credentials, OR, leverage the InCommon authentication option which will use your existing GVSU account and MFA. InCommon federation allows you to login as you would to any GVSU application, utilizing our existing Duo MFA.

If you have not created an account with Research.gov or the NSF, simply proceed to the login page and choose the "Organizational Credentials" option and search for Grand Valley State University:

After clicking the Sign In button, you'll be asked to authenticate like you would for any GVSU site or application and authorize the MFA Duo prompt.

If you have an existing Research.gov NSF account and wish to use this method, the email address must be your GVSU email address. If that is already the case, your account will merge automatically on login. If your current Research.gov NSF account uses a different email address, you will need to change that. Here are the steps for updating it:

You can update your NSF account primary address on your own in Research.gov if you sign into Research.gov with NSF credentials (NSF ID / primary email address + password) and enroll in an MFA method to access Research.gov. Users must have access to their current primary email address in order to update it. After signing into Research.gov, select My Profile from the top of the screen and then click the Edit button on the My Profile page to make changes. If you change your primary email address, NSF will send you a verification email. You must verify the updated primary email address within four hours or your account email address will revert back to your last verified email address.

Once this process is completed, you can authenticate using the Organizational Credentials option as outlined above.
