FAQs

Q. What if I forget my Master Password?

A.  There is no Master Password, you use Okta to verify your GVSU credentials.

Q. Can I access 1Password when I'm not online?

A.  No. Due to having to go through the verification process with Okta after a period of inactivity for security purposes, you will not be able to use 1Password when not online.

Q. Is 1Password mandatory?

A. No. However, if you are unable to remember all your passwords or want more secure passwords, then we strongly encourage the use of a password manager, and our recommendation would be 1Password. In today's technical environments, it's likely you have more passwords than you can remember, or you tend to reuse them because of how many accounts you have. If this is you, then you really should be using a password manager that can create and track complex passwords.

Q. What are the benefits of a 1Password Business account?

A.  Business Account Benefits

  1. Two-Factor Authentication
  2. Shared folders
  3. Strong, Unique Passwords
  4. Auto fill and Form Filling
  5. Cross-Platform Support
  6. Password Health Checks
  7. A free subscription to 1Password Families that lets you have up to five people with unique accounts under your name with the ability to share them with each other.

Q. Is there a risk to putting all your passwords in one place?

A.  While leveraging a password manager does "put all of your eggs in one basket", we believe the reward outweighs the risk. 1Password never actually has a decrypted version of any data. The only place the passwords are accessible in a usable form is on your machine. To gain this access, we require both a master password and two-step authentication.

Q. How do I securely share a password?

A.  1Password allows you to securely share passwords and other sensitive information with other users. You can control access permissions, set expiration dates, and revoke access at any time, making it ideal for team collaboration or sharing accounts with family members. Read Sharing passwords to learn more.

Q. How can I generate secure passwords?

A.  1Password can be used to both store and generate secure passwords. For step-by-step instructions, read Generate a secure password.

Q. How do I set up additional trusted devices and browsers?

A.  On the new device you want to authorize, you will first need to acknowledge the enrollment with any of your other trusted devices. Read our getting started guide or 1Password’s Set up trusted devices  to learn more.

Q. How do change the auto-lock timer?

A.  On any device with the desktop app installed you can change the auto-lock timer. This is accomplished by going to Settings -> Security. There you can change the value for the setting "Lock after the system is idle for." The setting is 10 minutes by default.

Troubleshooting

Firefox loads a blank page or says "Signing in to 1Password SSO" after logging in with Okta.

Firefox doesn't automatically close the redirect page or verification page currently. You may see a blank page or one similar to the image below, but if you look at the 1Password desktop app or browser extension it will show you as logged in successfully. You can close these windows after they open.

1Password sign in window.

Verification code did not work when registering a new machine.

There may have been a timing issue or typo in your first attempt. After a failure, you will see a new code generated on the machine you got the previous code from.

Not seeing Family account in other places I've signed my business account into.

You need to manually add the account to the device you want access to the Family account on.
