When to Use?
Your passwords and other sensitive information may be stored and managed securely with the use of 1Password, a password manager. In addition to helping you create secure passwords and thwarting phishing attempts, 1Password will also streamline your daily tasks and free up time by solving your password-related issues. You do not need to be concerned about remembering a complicated master password because your 1Password account is linked to your GVSU account in Okta. Watch this quick video tutorial to help you get started. You can also use the instructions below to activate your GVSU 1Password Business account.
Procedure
Creating your account
- Users with an @gvsu.edu account wanting access to 1Password may request an account through the Service Catalog.
- You will receive an email from "accounts@1password.com" containing an invitation to create a 1Password account. It is best to do this process on the device you use most frequently. Any future device used to access your account will prompt you with a device verification code through a previously activated device. In the email, you should see the "join now" button inviting you to join 1Password. Click on it to proceed.
- You will be redirected to a webpage where you will need to enter your GVSU credentials.
*Note: If you also have an administrative account, please ensure you are logging in with your standard account credentials.
- Once your account is confirmed, you will be directed to the homepage of 1Password to view your dashboard.
Installing the Desktop Application
-
You are required to download and install the 1Password application on your device, as it is used to verify your identity even when using the browser extension. This can be performed by clicking on your name in the right corner and clicking "Get the Apps." This will take you to the download page. Alternatively, you may download the application through their website, https://1password.com/downloads. For instructions on setting up the browser extension see our Troubleshooting and FAQ page.
- Click the appropriate download link based on your operating system (Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, etc.).
- Run the program you downloaded in the previous step. This will create a prompt to install 1Password. Please click the "Yes" button to continue. On Windows, you may get an additional prompt asking if you want to run the software first, please click "Run" to continue.
- Once the application is installed, the 1Password home screen will automatically launch. Click the sign in option to bring up a menu with ways to sign in. For your first device, it is easiest to use the top option labeled "Sign in with SSO.".
- To use "Sign in with SSO," you will receive a prompt similar to the one below. Enter the sign-in address (https://gvsu-edu.1password.com) and enter your full @gvsu.edu email address.
You will then be prompted to sign in with Okta. If you are already signed into https://my.gvsu.edu, this process will be automatic.
- When logging into a device for the first time, you will need to verify the device or web browser with 1Password on a previously confirmed device. On the 1Password GVSU web page you will see the image shown under step 7. If you do not there may be a red bell alert on the upper right side of the page indicating a recent device has attempted to log in. Click the red bell to take you to your ‘My Profile" page.
- From the "My Profile" page under Pending Devices, click "View." This will give you the option to accept or deny the device. Click Accept and enter the displayed validation code into your 1Password application.
- After the initial log-in you will only need to select "Sign in with Okta" to open the program to view your vaults. If you are using Firefox as your default browser the verification page which opens to confirm your identity does not automatically close once it is finished. If you are already signed into my.gvsu.edu it will be a blank page. If you are not already signed in it will display a page saying "Signing in to 1Password SSO" that does not close or redirect after you login.
Adding 1Password to additional devices
-
Similar to the sign-in process above, you will want to download the app through the website https://gvsu-edu.1password.com/ or from their website https://1password.com/downloads on the device you are adding. For mobile, you can get the 1Password app from the appropriate app store for the device.
- You will need to verify the device or web browser with 1Password when you log into a device for the first time. This is the same process as outlined above. On the 1Password web page, there should be a red bell alert on the upper right corner of the page indicating a recent device has attempted to log in. Clicking the red bell will take you to your ‘My Profile" page.
- From the "My Profile" page under Pending Devices, click "View" to accept or deny the device. Click Accept and enter the validation code into the 1Password application.
